What is forest bathing?

Forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, is a term that took shape in Japan in the 1980s. Translated literally, it means "bathing yourself in the atmosphere of the forest."

It isn't hiking for exercise. There's no distance to conquer, no summit to reach. At its heart, it's about walking slowly enough to notice what you'd usually walk right past.

The sound of leaves, the smell of earth after rain, the bark of each tree unlike any other — and letting your body slowly settle into that same pace.

Our session runs three hours, yet the walking adds up to less than a kilometre — because most of the time goes into stopping to look, not walking.

Clearing up a few things

What forest bathing is not

Not a hike

No destination to reach, no need to be fit, no gear required. If you walk slowly, you're welcome to walk slowly.

Not a meditation class

No sitting cross-legged, no keeping your eyes closed for long stretches, no posture to get right.

Not treatment

We're a space for nature-based activities, not a medical facility, and we don't provide any medical services.

What a session feels like

What happens across those three hours

09:00

Arrive, set down your bags, set down your phone

No rush. There's time to settle in before we really begin, and we'll invite you to leave your phone at the storage point.

09:20

Take off your shoes, feel the ground

Grounding — standing and walking barefoot on soil and grass. This is where the body starts to register that it has left the office behind.

09:45

Walk slowly, with a guide

Walking, then pausing. Someone gently points you toward one thing at a time — a sound, a smell, light slipping through the leaves. No need to speak until you want to.

10:30

Stay with a single tree

Choose a tree you feel drawn to and stay with it quietly. Sit against it, lean on it, put your arms around it — whatever feels right.

11:15

Work with what you've gathered

Leaves, twigs and seeds collected along the way — arrange them into something of your own. There's no right or wrong.

11:40

A closing sharing circle

We sit in a circle. Share if you'd like to, or simply listen if you'd rather. No one is called on to speak.

Questions we hear often

Is there a lot of walking? What if I can't walk far?

The whole session covers less than a kilometre, and very slowly. There are places to sit and rest all along the way. If you'd rather not walk at any point, you're welcome to stay put and wait.

Do I really have to go barefoot? What if I'm not comfortable with that?

It's never required. You can keep your shoes on the whole time. Most people who hesitate at first end up taking them off later on their own — but if you don't, no one will mind.

What happens if it rains?

If the rain is light, we carry on as usual — the smell of earth after rain is a favourite part for many people. If it's heavy enough to be unsafe, we'll let you know ahead of time and reschedule.

What should I bring?

Comfortable clothes you don't mind getting dirty and can sit on the ground in. Beyond that, just come as you are.

Can I come on my own?

Of course. Coming on your own is completely normal here, and there's no point where you're made to pair up or introduce yourself.

Soul Healing House is a space for nature-based and personal-growth activities, not a medical facility, and we don't provide medical services. If you have any health concerns, we recommend speaking with a doctor or qualified professional directly.
